The artist Sally Morgan uses simple figurines or symbols and shades of colours that represent real imagery to tell her storys - as do other aboriginal artists - I love the colours of the earth and the clarity of the colours used in Aboriginal art - this I think shows the strength of movement and texture - I also believe that aboriginal art is a great example of how symbolisn represents different things to different cultures and different people. There is a wonderful -painting by an aboriginal artist called sugarbag - The artist is

The paintings - art work that have influenced the art piecce
Sally Morgan and her painting Australian song where aboriginal people are reaching for the sun for live ? for energy? in harmony? The simplicity and shapes of her figures and also the realism of the colours where the sun is yellow and the figures are black.
The painting by Henry Matisse, The sorrows of the King shows how he cuts each section or part of the figure or object as a separate piece and places them in the proximity's - I have attempted to show this in a simpler form with the figures and shapes on earth.

The experimental stage
The first stages of my art piece
I have decided to use colours that represent real imagery. Yellow for the sun blue for the earth and for the earth to be looming towards the mother and child as almost a threatening force heading towards them.
This is the first stage. I have used red on the mothers skirt and the flower to attempt to balance the picture as the mother and child are as much the focus as is the earth.
The next stage is to start to add cut outs of contemporary issues - I am thinking that too many images may make the piece lose its impact so we will see!

exploring different artists and their associations with collage

My idea
I am going to include all contempory issues with a fore ground of a mother and child looking into a collage of contempory issues! But how am I going to do this? I need to research some backgrounds. Is it going to be a dark portrayal or a bright and hopeful one? I think a progresssion of both. How will I portray this, what materials should/can I use? What is the best glue? How big will it be? What style do I like? How will I proportion the images onto a canvas ? What colours will assist in portraying my message? How can I show a mothers apprehension ? Lots of research to do!
My assessment
My assessment for Visual art and innovation is to choose an art style or form and create an art piece using the elememnts, principles and language of art. I am working with a partner to create an education package for art in a primary education setting. The art style/ form we have chosen is collage. As well as an art piece I have to create a Pecha Kucha to present my journey and an art statement for my piece. The art piece is to be on a contemporary issue.

Different styles of collage
I have a favourite series of collage work - it is the Jazz period or series by famous artist Henry Matisse. It is believed - written that he was one of the first artist to use this form of cutting out shapes - sometimes called scissor painting.
I am going to use this style for my art piece as I think it is very doable for primary students and any budding artist.
I am going to cut out images from google and appropriate them to make them mine and stick them on to a canvas.
The art form, Collage, includes many different styles or techniques.
The process - research
